The 5th edition of the Sailadhar Baruah Memorial Film Awards (NE) 2022 have been announced.
According to reports, Khasi film Iewduh directed by Pradip Kurbah and produced by Sankar Lall Goenka, won the “Best Film” award.
Lewduh is set in Shillong, and takes its title from the large market in Meghalaya’s capital which is also known as Barabazaar. The film narrates the daily lives of the people involved with the market. The film had earlier won the Kim Ji-seok Award at the 2019 Busan International Film Festival in Korea.Moreover, at the 67th National Film Awards, Iewduh won the Best Audiography Award , apart from winning the Best Film in Khasi.

The Sailadhar Baruah Film Awards – a feature film competition for various languages from North- East States like Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Tripura and Sikkim to encourage the production of films of aesthetic and technical excellence, Social relevance and cultures in Cinematic form also promoting unity and integrity of North-east Region.
The Sailadhar Baruah Awards which goes by the name Sailadhar Baruah was a prominent filmmaker of the state. He brought several laurels for the state by making several successful and award wining films along with Noted filmmaker Jahnu Barua which includes Halodhia Choraye Baodhan Khai (The Catastrophe) and Xagoroloi Bohudoor (It’s a Long Way to the Sea) .
Halodhiya Choraye Baodhan Khai (English subtitle: The Catastrophe) which was directed by noted filmmaker Jahnu Barua and released in 1987 was his first film as a producer. It won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in 1988 and multiple awards at the Locarno International Film Festival in 1988. The film received several awards and recognitions including National Award for Best Film, Indian Panorama, Silver leopard (Locarno), Best Actor for Indra Bania (Locarno), Citizens’ Prize (Locarno), World Ecumenical Award (Locarno), Best Film (Amien), Best Actor (Amien) and Best of Asia (Tokyo). Sailadhar Baruah produced five films and all films received National and International Awards including World Peace Prize in Chicago International Film festival, Prix de Public in France, Fribourg, Switzerland and many more. He died on January 10, 2010 at the age of 69.
The Trustee established the Sailadhar Baruah Memorial Trust in 2016. The first three years film competition was held for Assamese, Bodo, Karbi, Mising, Rabha films etc. from the State of Assam. Later the Sailadhar Baruah Memorial Trust decided to organize the competition for the Films from North- East Region to promote unity and integrity of the region.
Last time at the 4th edition of Sailadhar Baruah Film Awards , the award for the best film was bagged by Bornodi Bhotiai, directed and produced by Anupam Kaushik Borah. While noted actor Arun Hazarika won the Best Actor (Male) Award for the Film Gobardhan Sorit and the Best Actor Female Award was bagged by Lima Das for the film Aamis.
