Kolkata ‘s custom officials caught the man at the Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport in Kolkata for trying to smuggle cash with over ₹ 32 lakh in US dollar bills concealed in gutkha pouches.
After going through his checked-in baggage, they recovered $40,000 (worth ₹ 32,78,000) packed as two ten dollar bills and each concealed inside the sachets.
As per reports , the recovered foreign currency has been seized under Section 110 of the Customs Act. The passenger has been placed under arrest in terms of Section 104 of the Customs Act. The accused person was later produced before a special court, which then remanded him to 14 days of judicial custody.
The man was scheduled to depart to Bangkok after immigration formalities . The officials intercepted the person after receiving intelligence input.
In the video a customs officer is seen tearing off the sachets and takes out neatly folded 10 dollar bills, sealed with transparent plastic, along with some powdered substance, presumably pan masala, inside them.
While sharing and reacting to the video, Anand Mahindra said: “There is no shortage of innovative thinking and “manufacturing” in India.”
He also added , “I just wish this gentleman had applied his creativity to more productive and law-abiding goals!.”
