The Department of Zoology and Department of Botany at the University of Science & Technology Meghalaya joined hands to celebrate World Wetland Day 2024 today at the Deepor Beel Wildlife Sanctuary in Guwahati. The event brought together over 40 students and faculty members to raise awareness about the critical importance of wetlands for human wellbeing and the planet’s ecosystem.
The celebration commenced with a compelling talk by Mr. Sudipta Nag, Assistant Professor in the Department of Zoology, shedding light on the historical significance of wetlands, their importance, and the pressing issues threatening their existence. Mr. Nag emphasized the adverse impact of anthropogenic activities on wetland ecosystems, underlining the urgent need for conservation efforts.
As part of the event, students and faculty embarked on a bird-watching trail along the picturesque Deepor Beel, witnessing the diverse array of migratory birds that grace the sanctuary during the winter months. The immersive experience served to underscore the rich biodiversity that wetlands sustain and the need for their protection.
The culmination of the program featured a hands-on cleanliness drive led by Dr. Bhagyashree Mahanta, Assistant Professor in the Department of Zoology, and Dr. Amilia Nongbet, Assistant Professor in the Department of Botany. Participants actively engaged in cleaning efforts along the stretch of Deepor Beel, reaffirming their commitment to the conservation and preservation of wetland ecosystems.
Reflecting on the day’s activities, participants pledged to contribute actively to the betterment and conservation of wetlands, recognizing their intrinsic value in sustaining life and fostering ecological balance.
