As we know the Northeast state of Assam has been facing devastating affect during the years of the worst floods. During this hard time UNICEF has been the helping hand. The situation in Silchar and surrounding areas in Cachar district is especially is in worst situation. The monsoon season which has influence the situation. The people living in those areas are forced to flee and give up to their land and homes. The flood have left over 4.5 million people including 1 million children from 4536 villages in 30 districts at risk of disease, poor nutrition and displacement.
The access to clean air and clean water is a basic right. UNICEF is working in providing clean water in coordination with respective governments to the needs of affected children and families.
United Nation Children’s Fund stated a statement that “ clean and safe drinking water is the basic need of the hour, as flood waters have submerged homes and villages in Cachar district, one of the worst impacted in the state. To ensure safe access to drinking water to vulnerable populations, UNICEF Assam along with DDMA Cachar and partner Oxfam India have installed four filtration units – two units are deployed in Katigorah Revenue Circle, one in Silchar town and the fourth in Sonai Revenue Circle. The units can produce 700 to 1000 litres of water per hour. Each unit can cater to 100-150 households (4,500-6,750 people) living within 500 meters of the unit, for basic needs such as cooking and hygiene”
