North Eastern Region considered as good number people consuming pork. Since April 2020, It is reported that nearly 39,340 pigs died after infected by African swine Fever (ASF).
Assam as the leading state in Northeast region alone is the home for 38.42% of the total pig farming. In the last 2012 census Pig population in Assam has grown from 16 lakh to 12 lakh in 2020. Over 15 lakhs families involve in pig rearing in Assam.
On Wednesday, the Assembly informed nearly 39,000 pigs have died of African Swine Fever (ASF) in Assam in the last one and a half years.
Meanwhile , In a written reply to a query by BJP MLA Chakradhar Gogoi, Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Minister Atul Bora said 38,700 pigs died due to ASF since its detection in the north- eastern state in 2020. As many as 13,200 families have been economically affected as a result of the pig deaths, the minister said. However, the government has not paid any compensation to the affected families as the matter is under the jurisdiction of the Centre, Bora added.
In India Assam is having the highest Pig population ,but in the recent data shown Pig population in the country has decreased from1.03cr to 90.6 lakhs.

This Virus Vaccine is not yet developed.
African Swine Fever (ASF) is highly contagious hemorrhagic viral disease. It causes fever, loss appetite, vomiting and bloody diarrhea in pigs and wild boar.
It also caused by doubled-stranded DNA virus in the Asfarvirdae family.
