Over two dozen exotic animals species were rescued from Australia, South America, and Malaysia by way of wet markets in Southeast Asia, and may become a major attraction for visitors to the Assam state zoo here after legal clearance. When the species were rescued by forest authorities, they were greatly threatened, but forest officials reported that they have gradually recovered after lengthy care at the zoo. Since 2020, the only two parcels were discovered in Hajo, near Guwahati, and in the Karbi Anglong district.
Though the smuggled species have recovered and adaptive to the local environment, we need legal clearance before they can be displayed to the public. Officials also mentioned that the state zoo, one of the city’s most popular tourist attractions, needs prized items from which to raise tourism revenue. We don’t have any species that are native to countries outside Asia, aside from one giraffe, a few hippopotamus, and one binturong.
