13th August has been designated International Left-Handers Day by Lefthanders International with the first one being observed on 13th August 1976. Left-handers Day Was Declared by The Left-Hander’s Day Club On 13th August 1997.
Lefties make up only about 10 percent of the population, but studies find that individuals who are left-handed score higher when it comes to creativity, imagination, daydreaming and intuition. They’re also better at rhythm and visualization.
Everytime Lefties have been such a fascination for so long that study after study has been conducted on what makes them so unique.
Historically, left-handed people have been viewed and treated as outcasts. In the Middle Ages, left-handed people feared being accused of witchcraft.
As recently as the early 20th century, many educators in the United States forced left-handers to “retrain” their natural tendencies in order to become right-handed.
As per an article published in healthline website, A 2007 study in the Journal of the Indian Academy of Applied Psychology found that, out of 150 subjects, left-handed participants were significantly more likely to perform better on an intelligence test than right-handed people. Right-handers also took more time to complete the test.
Another study in the journal Brain in 2019 revealed that there are genetic differences between left-handers and right-handers.
Around 400,000 people were examined and with the data, scientists discovered that the left and right hemispheres of the brain were better connected and more coordinated in regions involving language in left-handed people.
These traits suggest that left-handed individuals may have superior verbal skills.
So for all the lefties, here comes a few random facts about them which are apparently the most endearing character traits:
They’re highly adaptable – Nearly all instruments and machines have been built by and for right-handed people. That means left-handers have had to adapt to less-than-ideal circumstances throughout their whole lives. Hats off to your flexibility, intrepid lefties!
They remember events better than facts – This may have to do with the way lefties use their brains, but it definitely makes their memory special.
Being left-handed is more common in twins – One study found that 21 percent of twins are left-handed.
They’re better at sports and fighting – Lefties can swing mean left hooks and can adapt quickly to unexpected situations in sports.
They’re not necessarily right-brained – It’s a common myth that lefties are right-brained and more creative and artistic than righties. Most right-handed and left-handed people use the left hemisphere of the brain to process language and information.
