Meghalaya Grassroots Music Program– India’s Rock Capital Shillong needs no further introduction when it comes to having strong musical roots and abundant musical talent. With new and bright talents evolving ,grassroots musical platforms can help nourish their art and take forward this musical legacy . That’s what is the aim behind the Meghalaya Grassroots Music Project (MGMP).Apart from providing employment and support to Artistes, Technical Vendors, up-and-coming Event Firms, etc. MGMP offers a variety of musical entertainment options for tourists . MGMP is scheduled from September 9 – December 22 ,2022 in Shillong.
Megha Kayak Festival – The aim of this festival is to promote adventure tourism and help establish Meghalaya as one of the major water sports destinations in the world. Aiming to be the largest festival in the Indian subcontinent, with over 80 white-water kayakers from all the worldcompeting – including a large contingent from India & Nepal.This festival is scheduled from October 13 to October 16 , 2022 at Umtrew River near Umtham village and will feature Olympic approved disciplines such as The Giant Slalom , Extreme Boater-cross and Time-Trial Races. Apart from this separate competition categories for intermediate and novice kayakers are also included.
The Autumn Festival – The Shillong Autumn Festival, is held to mark the beginning of the new Autumn season on the banks of the enchanting Umiam Lake. It symbolizes the state’s rich cultural legacy. The festival also gives an opportunity for visitors to enjoy music performance by prominent music performers from throughout the state and country, also local foods and items like pickles, wines, crafts, and more. This festival is scheduled from October 29 – October 30 ,2022 at the umiam Lake.
The Umiam Boating Regatta – This year 2022 will witness a boating contest for the first time called the Umiam Boating Regatta . This event will have a series of boating competitions. Approximately 1500 boats will be brought for this event and as per reports ,the state government has collaborated with the Indian Army. The total estimated sponsorship for this event is Rs 25 lakh. The Umiam Boating Regatta will be held from November 2 – November 6 at Umiam Lake in shillong.
The Hills Festival – Celebrating the modern and traditional wealth of the state from music and art installations to local cuisines ,The Hills Festival is a 2-day homegrown festival. The festival is set along the banks of the Umiam Lake and held in the autumn. Highlighting and celebrating the state’s modern and traditional culture and rich diversity, this festival features live music, drinks, cuisine, and fun activities in the beautiful landscapes of Shillong. The Hills Festival is scheduled from November 4 – November 5, 2022 at Umiam Lake.
The Nongkrem Dance– The Nongkrem Dance is a significant festival of the Khasisand is held in the courtyard of the Nongkrem Syiem or chief’s residence in the picturesque town of Smit Meghalaya. The Nongkrem dance festival is a five-day long event and there are many rituals performed involving the current royal of the Khyrim Hima (kingdom). ‘Pomblang’ the sacrifice of goats is also an important ceremony of this festival. The pomblang or goat sacrifice ceremony precedes the dance, where unmarried maidens and male members of the community constitute the dancing troupe where all participants are attired the best of traditional outfits. This festival is scheduled from November 6- November 7, 2022 at Ing Sad Smit Nongkrem, Meghalaya.
The Wangala Festival– Wangala is the harvest festival of the Garo community. The festival honours Saljong, the Sun-God of fertility .Visitors enjoy the captivating dance and vibrant costumes with the local cuisine and the traditional beverages .Towards the end of the festival (which continues for days), the largest batch of dancers converge on the main celebration area with multiple drum and perform the ceremonial and traditional dances. This festival is scheduled from November 9 – November 11, 2022 in Tura, Meghalaya .
The Shillong Cherry Blossom Festival– When cherry trees blossom transforming Shillong into a city of pink , The shillong Cherry Blossom Festival is held feauting a variety of both the modern and traditional aspects of Meghalayan culture. A few hotspots of the festival include the Wards’ Lake and the JN Sports Complex, where musical performances and local stalls are set up to enthrall and entertain the visitors and audience. This Festival will be held from November 17 to November 26, 2022 in Shillong.
The Meghalaya International Film Festival– This festival aims to encourage the film culture among the people of the state thereby boost the economy and tourism of the state. The Meghalaya International Film Festival is scheduled between December 12- December 16.
The Winter Tales Festival- Winter Tales Festival include a variety of events and initiatives .You can enjoy food, art, craft, and music. Its designed in such a way that it compliments the scenic beauty of Ward’s Lake in Shillong .This festival is scheduled from December 12 – December 17 , 2022.
