Ratan Lal Nath, Education minister, Tripura government said that the state government has decided to set up five new degree colleges in the state to lessen the burden on the existing colleges. Currently there are 22 general degree colleges in Tripura.
He said that, during the upcoming academic session, the five new degree colleges in Tripura comprising one English medium will open and out of these five colleges .He also said that out of five colleges, three will be government-run while two will be private colleges.
The three degree colleges will be opened and located at Old Agartala and Old DIET (District Institute of Education and Training) (English medium) in West Tripura district and Panisagar in Unakto district.
Education minister, Ratan Lal Nath further mentioned that a Law College will be set up by a West Bengal-based society at Jirania in West Tripura district and a Degree College in Kakraban area of Gomati district’s and already the Tripura University has granted affiliation to all the five-degree colleges .
However, approval is awaited from the Bar Council of Tripura for opening the Law College, he said.
In order to fill the gap of sufficient colleges, steps are also being taken to look into the matter for lack of sufficient teaching staff in the proposed three government-run colleges.
Currently 38 Assistant Professors have been appointed with 40 more to be recruited shortly and the government is also planning to hire around 300 guest lecturers for the colleges.
The minister further said that the government is planning to regularise the services of ‘college teachers’ with required qualifications who have also rendered their service for a long time in degree colleges for long years.
