A shocking incident came into light when doctors in Ireland removed 55 AA and AAA batteries from a 66-year-old woman’s gut and stomach .The woman swallowed an initially “unknown number” of cylindrical batteries in an act of deliberate self-harm.
As per a report published by the Irish Medical Journal on Thursday , the doctors at St Vincent’s Hospital in Dublin, Ireland, removed the 55 batteries from her stomach and colon.
And as per the report the doctor said that this was the highest ever reported number of swallowing batteries .
This incident has shocked the doctors as there are many mentioned instances of a child swallowing small, button-style batteries but this case was unexpected
According to UCSF’s Benioff Children’s Hospitals , in most of the common cases of battery ingestion among kids, without any damage sometimes the batteries pass through a child’s body. But this can severe life threatening if they get stuck in the throat, they can cause severe and even life-threatening injuries.
Reports say , as soon as saliva kick-starts an electric current in the trapped batteries, it stimulates a chemical reaction which can burn the esophagus and can cause severe tissue damage and bleeding.
While , as per the X-ray report of the woman, it revealed that the batteries didn’t show any signs of damage and the batteries in her abdomen did not obstruct her gastrointestinal (GI) tract.
Meanwhile after observing the curious case of the woman for one week , the doctors performed laparotomy on her .
They found that the stomach, pulled down by the weight of the batteries and the distended stomach ended up hanging over the pubic bone which necessitated a surgical removal of the objects.
The surgeons then cut a small hole in her stomach and removed 46 batteries – including both AA and AAA – from the organ.
Lastly the four remaining batteries, stuck in the colon, were “milked” into her rectum and removed through the anus, according to Live science— bringing the total number of swallowed batteries to 55.
