Imagine getting the “Jail Feel” as a part of Jail Tourism. This might sound odd but the feel is real now as Uttarakhand’s Haldwani prison has developed its abandoned section for accomodation of tourists for experience of a night in jail. For one night stay in prison the tourists can pay for Rs 500 and can explore the ‘real jail feel.’
The abandoned section of the Haldwani prison are now transformed as a part of Jail tourism and accommodate not inmates but “jail guests” who has a desire to experience to feel about night stay in jail or in some instances even for those advised by astrologers to serve time in jail to avoid “Bandhan Yog” in horoscopes which forecast imprisonment.
Whatever be the reason, the urge to feel the jail experience or because of horoscope prophesies but the truth is the jail experience is now made possible in Haldwani prison.
The transformation part of the Haldwani prison is currently being worked upon by the Uttarakhand . Built in 1903 ,the Haldwani prison is over 100 years old. Since its lacks maintenance so a section of the prison and six staff quarters are now prepared to welcome tourists as jail guests.
Similarly for a price of Rs 500, Sanhareddy District Central Jail in Telangana , also allows tourists to live a jail life as prisoners for 24 hours. Located in the Medak district of Telangana, the Sanhareddy District Central Jail started jail tourism six years ago. The jail was built by the Nizams in the year 1796 .
The heritage jail building was converted to a museum but later Deputy Superintendent of Police M Lakshmi Narasimha proposed the initiative of ‘Feel the Jail.’ Eventually tourists were also invited to stay for 24 hours as part of an expansion of their concept.
As per a report, although it seems to be a thrilling and unique experience but 30 percent of the jail guests leave out of abrupt sheer fear and whoever do this and leave ,an extra charge of Rs 500 is charged for the unfinished term. But for those who complete the full 24 hours walk out with the feel of freedom .
