International Hair Freezing Contest, Canada –
Sounds weird but there is a contest for winter celebration called the International Hair Freezing Contest. As per reports this fun winter contest is observed in February every year in the frigid province of Yukon,Canada at the Takhini Hot Pools. The contest Participants dip their heads in the hot water of the pools and then create weird hairstyles covered with frost by shaping their hairs as they freeze in the cold air above. The contest is done without any fixed dates but mostly during the severe freezing days where temperature reaches as low as to -20 ° C so that the wet hair freezes instantly. The Takhini Hot springs which are between 36-42° C protect people from becoming frozen. Top three winners of the contest are selected with the most weirdest hairstyles.
World Toe Wrestling Championships, England-
Toe wrestling is similar to arm wrestling ,the opponents lock their bare feet with toes and attempts to force the opponent’s foot down. As per reports the practice of toe wrestling first originated in the village of Wetton, Staffordshire, England,in the 1970s. It is said that a group of mates at the Ye Olde Royal Oak Inn wanted an activity , a championship of their own, and toe wrestling was chosen as the unique sport. The competition later became a popular practice in Northern England. According to reports it has three rounds played with the right foot, then left and right again. Moreover, there are men’s and women’s Toe Wrestling Championships. However all participants must pass a toe examination by a qualified nurse.
Cheese Rolling Contest, Gloucestershire, England, UK-
The Cheese Rolling Contest is an annual race held at the Cooper’s Hill, near Brockworth, Gloucester in England . This fun sport attracts people across the globe who come all the way to chase a Double Gloucester cheese down the steep 200-yard-long hill. Thousands of Participants race down the 200-yard (180 m) long hill after a round of Double Gloucester cheese is sent rolling down it. As per reports the cheese used is 3–4-kilogram Double Gloucester, a hard cheese traditionally made in a circular shape . Before the contest begins at the Cooper’s Hill , the fences are removed, the location is cleaned thoroughly and stones and other dangerous objects are removed but yet the race is considered dangerous for participants and viewers as well. There has been cases of injury due to steepness , unevenness of the hill and also due to the speed of the cheese . As per further reports the cheese speeds up to 70mph, the contestants run down the hill and the first runner to the bottom wins and the prize is the cheese . Apparently the event was an age old tradition, and is believed to be around six hundred years old. Surprisinglyalthough its dangerous but it has been called as “world-famous event”, by The Guardian.
Wife Carrying World Championship, Sonkajärvi, Finland-
The contest of “Wife Carrying” or eukonkanto in Finnish initially originated as a sport in Sonkajärvi,Finland in 1992. The male competitors race while each carrying a female teammate. Several types of carrying may be practised: either a classic piggyback, a fireman’s carry (over the shoulder), or Estonian-style (wife upside-down on his back with her legs over the neck and shoulders) .Usually the men compete mostly with the Estonian-style with wives hanging upside down with her legs around her husband’s shoulders Husbands compete to set the fastest time over more than 253.5-meter track long with obstacle. Although the exact origins of the tradition are not known but as per reports ,each story is related with theft. The contest is held every year in Sonkajarvi, 300 miles (480 kilometres) from the Finnish capital Helsinki.
World Bog Snorkeling Championships, Llanwrtyd Wells, Wales, UK
Bog snorkeling initially originated as a sport in in 1976 in Llanwrtyd Wells and since 1985 the annual August championship has been running at Waen Rhydd bog. The World Bog Snorkelling Championship is part of a two-day World Bog Series which takes place over the August Bank Holiday weekend in Llanwrtyd Wells, Wales. The participants are armed with a snorkel and flippers and are supposed to complete two consecutive lengths in a 60-yard trench of water cut through a peat bog, relying only on their flippers in the shortest time possible, without swimming. It is said that large number of people come to Wales from around the world to participate in this unique sporting event.
Air Guitar World Championship, Oulu, Finland-
Since the year 1996, the Air Guitar World Championship has been held annually in Oulu, Finland as part of the Oulu Music Video Festival. Contestants around the world bring out their best on stage without any guitar and also without being embarrassed. The competition is based on mimicking guitar playing. The Music genres may vary, but the most common ones are heavy metal and rock. The purpose of the competition to promote World Peace : ‘Wars would end and all the bad things would go away if everyone just played air guitar.’ Well according to the ideology of the competition – “You can’t hold a gun while you play the air guitar.” Basically make Air not War. According to reports , Participants must play air guitar on stage in two rounds with each lasting at least one minute (one song is chosen by the participant and one by the organizer), they must play air guitar only (no drums, piano, etc.) and are scored out of 6.0.
