In a historic decision , the BCCI has announced about the implementation of a pay equity policy for the women’s cricket team players. The match fee for both Men and Women Cricketers will be the same, BCCI secretary Jay Shah confirmed it on social media.
While mentioning the move as “the first step towards tackling discrimination”, Jay Shah thanked the BCCI’s Apex Council for its support in implementing the move, which he said was a “commitment to our women cricketers.””I’m pleased to announce @BCCI’s first step towards tackling discrimination. We are implementing pay equity policy for our contracted @BCCIWomen cricketers. The match fee for both Men and Women Cricketers will be same as we move into a new era of gender equality in Cricket,” he wrote on Twitter.
“The @BCCIWomen cricketers will be paid the same match fee as their male counterparts. Test (INR 15 lakhs), ODI (INR 6 lakhs), T20I (INR 3 lakhs). Pay equity was my commitment to our women cricketers and I thank the Apex Council for their support. Jai Hind,” he added.
This decision by BCCI taken on Thursday is now seen a major step towards gender equality in the nation’s most favourite game. The disparity in pay structure in Indian Cricket has been a point of discussion for a long time.
The women’s cricket team have grabbed significant success in the past months .Recently, the Indian women’s cricket team won the Asia Cup in Bangladesh, beating the Sri Lankan counterpart by 8 wickets. They also won the country’s first-ever silver medal in August with a record 3-0 ODI series in cricket at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham earlier this year.
Mithali Raj, former captain of the India women’s national cricket team also took to her twitter handle to share her happiness regarding the historic decision in Indian cricket history.
