Delhi-based Centre of Science and Environment (CSE) has revealed in their study that Guwahati is in the top of the list of highest polluted cities in Assam. And Guwahati is actually breathing black carbon.
Black carbon is the sooty black material which is emitted from gas and diesel engines, coal-fired power plants, and other sources that burn fossil fuel.Black Carbon is seen as a major contributor to global climate change, possibly second only to CO2 as the main driver of change.
Along with Guwahati, Nagaon, Silchar, Sivasagar and Nalbari in Assam has also showed a huge mark in air pollution level since the pollutant levels in these cities have exceeded the prescribed air quality standards.
According to the study the level of air pollution is high in these cities of Assam due to heavy motorisation, traffic congestion and use of solid fuel.
Moreover the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) had also mentioned that the air quality in Guwahati is amongst the worst.
Similar to many other polluted cities across India ,Guwahati’s air pollution is also bad in winter.
