Rising cases of suicides among students in educational institutions across the country have become a grave issue now. And in order to keep a track on the mental health of students with low Cumulative Performance Index (CPI) and backlogging, IIT Guwahati has formulated a structured plan .
As per reports ,over 1,000 fresh undergraduate students have enrolled at the prestigious institute in October . IIT-Ghy has requested faculty advisers and counselors to communicate with the students who didn’t perform well in their exams.
According to counsellor Namrata Naomi Rynjah, the list of names of students with low CPIs and backloggers will be shared with the dean of student affairs and the chairperson of the welfare board by the academic section. IIT-Ghy have asked the faculty advisers and counselors to connect and interact with the students to understand their mental state and the cause of their poor performance. She also said that necessary steps will be taken to help and mentor the students.
According to further reports in order to communicate with the students facing expulsion (provisional) on academic grounds, an internal committee headed by the associate dean of student affairs has been setup along with the welfare board chairperson , wardens, and student representatives. The dean gets suggestions and advice by the committee regarding the kind of assistance and support needed by the student to tackle these challenges . And depending on the committee’s suggestion and recomendations , proper help and support including counseling, English language support, and subject support will be given to encourage development among the students.
Following the admission of B.Tech and B.Des in October , the well-being centre immediately organized counseling sessions with focus on suicide prevention . Besides debriefing sessions are being conducted in all the hostels accompanied by counselors to address their queries and concern.
