Indian constitution , the longest written constitution in the world originally had 395 articles, divided into 22 parts and 8 schedules. At present, our constitution contains 448 articles, with 12 schedules.
In the year 2015 ,the Government of India decided to establish November 26 as Constitution Day to advance “constitutional values among residents”. The year 2015 marked the 125th birth anniversary of Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar, the chairman of the Drafting Committee of the Constitution, also known as the “Father of the constitution”. As a tribute to the chairman of the drafting committee of the constitution, Prime Minister Narendra Modi declared the day while laying the foundation stone for the Statue of Equality on October 11, 2015.
The Constitution Day is also known as Samvidhan Divas. After India achieved independence and became an independent country, the job of drafting the Constitution was entrusted to a committee chaired by Dr BR Ambedkar by the Constituent Assembly. Dr Rajendra Prasad, the first President of India, was the President of the Constituent Assembly, which was established in 1946.
On August 29, 1947, a drafting committee under the chairmanship of Dr BR Ambedkar was constituted to prepare a draft constitution. A total of 11 sessions were held between December 9, 1946, and January 24, 1950 covering a total of 165 days. During this period there were over 2000 amendments made to the draft after much debate and discussion.
Dr Ambedkar completed the draft of the Indian Constitution and presented it in the Constituent Assembly in the beginning of 1948. On November 26, 1949, this draft was adopted with very few amendments. The Indian Constitution came into effect on January 26, 1950, which is observed as Republic Day.
The Constituent Assembly took almost three years to complete the crucial and the most historic task of drafting a Constitution for Independent India.
According to the Preamble of the Constitution , India is sovereign, socialist, secular and democratic republic and It secures justice, liberty, equality to all citizens of India and promotes fraternity amongst the people to maintain the unity and integrity of the nation.
Prem Behari Narain Raizada was the calligrapher of the Indian Constitution. The original constitution was handwritten by him in a flowing italic style. The original version was beautified and decorated by artists from Shantiniketan including Nand Lal Bose and Beohar Rammanohar Sinha.
The calligraphy of the Hindi version of the original constitution was done by Vasant Krishnan Vaidya and elegantly decorated and illuminated by Nand Lal Bose.
