Even though Silver was still used in some over-the-counter medicines in America but it was later banned by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) since the compound caused argyria.
Meanwhile Paul who was the victim of the serious skin condition was living a low profile life until he appeared on NBC’s Today Show in 2008 to discuss his condition.
Because of his unusual skin colour he was nicknamed as ‘Papa Smurf’ which he tolerated only when kids called him by that name but he completely disliked it if adults called him the same .
“That was a nickname he didn’t appreciate, depending on who said it. If it was a kid who ran up to him saying ‘Papa Smurf’, it would put a smile on his face. But if it was an adult, well…” shared his estranged widow in a past interview.
This unusual man died in 2013 after he suffered a cardiac arrest. Later, he lost it to pneumonia and a severe stroke.
