In recent times technology seems to be a boon as well as disastrous . We all are aware that OTPs are not meant to be shared with anyone but even though a shocking incident came into light after
Cybercriminals stole a total of Rs 50 lakh from the director of a security services company in south Delhi by repeatedly calling his phone and leaving blank and unanswered calls.
What is more surprising is that the entire act happened without involvement of one-time password (OTP).
According to reports, the man received constant calls calls between 7 and 8:45 p.m. on 10th October. Although he picked a few calls but there was only silence on the other side.
He did check his phone after he received texts on RTGS (instant fund transfer) transactions amounting to Rs 50 lakhs .
The case has been registered. And according to the preliminary investigation, Jamtara is the suspected spot where this fraud is thought to have been carried out.
As per further reports , It is suspected that the criminals carried out the entire scam through a technique known as SIM swapping or SIM switch. As per this technique ,fraudsters impersonate the victim and requests for a new SIM card from their mobile provider, after which they gain access to the victim’s phone number by bypassing two-factor authentication and intercept any calls or messages.
With Sim swapping the criminal first contact the SIM provider pretends to be the original owner. And as soon as the fraud SIM gets activated, the criminals take control of the victim’s mobile number and can even use it to receive and send calls and messages.
According to Cyber security experts, in order to prevent sim swapping, one should never share their personal information , including the OTP, with anyone at any cost. Besides it is best to enable two-factor authentication on your accounts and to keep a check for any suspicious activity on your bank statements. In case if you feel that your SIM has been swapped the first thing to do is to contact your service provider immediately to report the fraud and request a new SIM.
