According to reports, a leopard was spotted trapped in Umananda Island in Guwahati . People are left wondering about how the leopard reached Umananda Island in the middle of the Brahmaputra River.
As per further reports, an adult leopard was spotted on the island by a construction worker today morning on December 20 . The leopard which seems to be hiding somewhere in the island has now created terror among the locals and also visitors and devotees who are seeking for help from authorities to get rid of the leopard .
Immediately after this incident, ferry services were stopped to the island in order to prevent any unfavourable circumstances . As per the update this morning , people were asked not to roam or go towards the northern side of the island, which seems to be the hiding spot of the animal .
The Umananda Island is the smallest inhabited river island in the middle of Brahmaputra river, flowing through the city of Guwahati in Assam .
The name derives from Assamese Uma, another name for the Hindu Goddess Devi Parvati , the wife of Lord Shiva and ananda, which translates to “joy”. According to historians , a british officer named the island Peacock Island for its structure, since he believed that the island resembled the splayed feathers of a peacock .
