18 years ago on this day in 2004, a massive undersea earthquake of 9.3-magnitude near the island of Sumatra in Indonesia triggered one of the biggest tsunami which killed thousands of people.
The Tsunami incident is also known as Boxing Day Tsunami. After causing massive destruction and loss of multiple lives, the Indian Ocean tsunami of 2004 on this day serves as a reminder of natural disasters as well as it throws light on the importance of safety measures for such disasters.
Today the Tsunami 2004 incident marks the 18th anniversary. In order to remember the lost lives , today a large number of people gathered in the coastal districts of Tamil Nadu and paid tribute to the victims of the 2004 tsunami .
According to reports, People living along the shoreline from Chennai to Kanyakumari, took out a silent procession to the beach and paid their tributes with flowers and by pouring milk into the sea .
It is said that the during the tsunami,which affected the surrounding coasts of the Indian Ocean in 14 countries killed people more than 2 lakhs . In India more than 10000 people lost their lives.
Today Lt. Governor Admiral D K Joshi paid floral tribute at Tsunami Memorial in Port Blair paying homage to the departed souls who lost lives in 2004 due to Tsunami.
