It’s the day of Christmas eve . It is said that the word ‘eve’ means the day or period of time before an occasion or event. Hence Christmas Eve means ‘the day before Christmas.’ The Christmas Eve which falls on December 24 is the evening or entire day before Christmas Day, the festival commemorating the birth of Lord Jesus.
On this Christmas eve , people get culturally united and they meet for family and friends gathering ,sing Christmas carols, decorate and illuminate their homes ,exchanges gifts.
Christmas Eve is also widely observed in many countries worldwide as a full or partial holiday before Christmas Day. Both days are considered significant for Christmas celebrations .
People across the globe in many countries celebrate Christmas Eve in different ways. On this day people in some countries are given a day off or half-day off , so that they can prepare for Christmas Day and do their last-minute shopping for gifts, decorations or food. People on Christmas Eve gather for big family meals which includes traditional Christmas special dishes.
People also exchange gifts with their loved ones and open those gifts on the night of Christmas Eve. At this time of the year ,as the entire places all across the globe lits up for Christmas , some groups even perform Christmas carols from home to home or in public places.
Christmas Eve, also known as the Vigil of Christmas, is perceived as the culmination of the Advent season. On the evening of December 24 the entire festive atmosphere lits up even more with family gatherings and the midnight mass at church before beginning the celebrations for the birthday of Jesus Christ .
The midnight mass is considered to be the most important Church service of the Christmas season across many traditions.
