Manipur state Bird Nong-in also known as Hume pheasant was captured in camera for the first time in the wild.
Behind this is the four member team of wildlife and three photographers and a reporter have spot Manipur state Bird.
As per sources Hume pheasants was captured in the forest of Razai village which is said 150 km distance from east Imphal.
It is given the highest level of protection. “A fine of Rs 10000 has been imposed on anyone hunting the bird” said church chairman Islamael HS of Razai village.
“ I had gone to Razai village in 2010 but I couldn’t see a live Nong-in even though there were reports of it’s availability in some pockets of Ukhrul namely Razai, Jesami and Shirui. So the recent photo is the first photograph of a Nong-in in the wild kam range in southern Manipur, which borders Mizoram said Shamungou,a former lecturer of DM college of science who has written many wild life books.
Mrs. Hume’s pheasant is State bird of Mizoram and Manipur. It’s Local name is Nong-in.
The bird was first discovered by AO Hume in 1881. So the bird is name after AO Hume. Hume was a British Civil servant and founder of Indian National Congress in 1885. He was an ornithologist too.
Know about the Manipur’s State bird
Mrs. Hume’s pheasant in IUCN status- is Near Threatened. The protection of state bird of Manipur is given Schedule I of the wildlife (Protection) act 1972. It is given the highest level of protection.
Apart from Manipur and Mizoram the state Bird is found in other part of Northeast state such as Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh.
The bird Hume pheasants apart from India it is endemic to China, Myanmar, Thailand, Burma.
