English language is known as the most widely spoken language in the world. According to Ethnologue, English is the largest language in the world for both native and non-native speaker. This universal language continues to evolve but interestingly there are many world English words that have been derived from Indian words . As per reports every year many words are being added into the English dictionary . but there are some english words which has it origin in India tracing its roots to Hindi, Sankrit and Urdu
Here are some commonly used English words derived from India —
1. JUNGLE
This English word ‘jungle’ is borrowed from the Hindi word ‘jangal’ and it means a dense tropical forest.
2. PYJAMA
The word ‘pyjama’ in English language is derived from the Hindi words ‘pajama’ or ‘payjama’, which means a loose fitting comfortable trouser used as nightwear.
3. AVATAR
The English word Avatar is used from Sanskrit word avatāra meaning descent of a deity from heaven.
4. BUNGALOW
The English word ‘bungalow’ has been derived from ‘bangla’ (meaning “Bengali”) and is used to mean “a house in the Bengali style”.
5. THUG
The English word ‘thug’ comes from hindi word Thagi/Thag ठग (ṭhag), meaning “thief or con man”.
6. LOOT
The word ‘loot’ in English language has been taken from the Hindi word ‘lut’, which means to rob or to plunder.
7. SHAMPOO
The word shampoo in English was taken from the Hindi word, ‘champoo’ or ‘champi’ (meaning “rub!”) dating to 1762.
8. CHIT
Chit word also comes from Hindi chitthi, a letter or note, the word means a short note on a piece of paper.
9. BANDANNA
The English word bandana stems from the Hindi words ‘bāndhnū,’ or “tie-dyeing,” and ‘bāndhnā,’ “to tie.” These stem from Sanskrit roots ‘badhnāti,’ “he ties,” and Sanskrit ‘bandhana’ (बन्धन), “a bond.” Bandana is a large coloured handkerchief, typically with white spots, worn tied around the head or neck.
10. VERANDA
The English word Veranda comes from the Hindi word baramdaa, but it is also said to be related to the Spanish baranda, meaning “railing, and probably it entered Hindi via Portuguese explorers of India.
