For the first time ever , a plus plus-size heroine marks entry into the streaming platform of Disney . Disney have created this new and unique plus-size protagonist for a powerful short film about body dysmorphia called “Reflect”.
Surprisingly in the 85-year history of the company, only the villain’s or extra characters were featured as plus-size characters .
Reflect is a short film which is a part of Disney’s Short Circuit series of experimental films. The film is about Bianca, a young ballet dancer who struggles with her body image because body dysmorphia .
Directed by Hillary Bradfield , Reflects shows Bianca’s teacher who is seen instructing her to have a “tight tummy!” and a “long neck!” while she stands in position feeling suffocated and trapped. But with time gradually Bianca gains confidence and continues her ballet dance class while discovering her new self .
Earlier released on Disney Plus on 14 September the film now is gaining popularity and fans are amazed to see a plus-size character as the female lead . Social media users are seen appreciating the idea of this new representation which was long awaited .
Director Hillary Bradfield previously has worked as an animation artist on Frozen 2 and Encanto. The film Encanto introduced Disney’s first princess with glasses .
Reflect is now trending on twitter where people are seen divided with their opinions on the representation . While a lot of users are seen praising the film for throwing light on body insecurity and struggles but some others have criticized Disney for encouraging and representing obesity.
Meanwhile it has been observed that Disney is taking efforts for positive representation in new projects.
Earlier in March, Disney-Pixar’s animated film Turning Red, which was based on tackling periods and puberty had triggered a lot of debate on social media .
