In a recent incident, four students of an engineering college in Karnataka’s Mangaluru have been suspended for dancing in burqas at a college event. The dance performance by the students wearing Burqas have sparked controversy since it was alleged that the burqa dance mocked burqa and hijab.
The video which has gone viral now shows four boys from the Muslim community dancing to ‘Fevicol Se‘ song wearing a burqa at an event of St Joseph Engineering College. As per reports the accused students barged on stage during the informal part of the students association inaugural.
Many people have criticized the incident along with the college administration for holding such an inappropriate performance and hurting the religious sentiments of the community.
But according to College authorities the dance performance was not a part of the approved list of programmes. Instead the students “barged on the stage during the informal” part of the event and violated “strict guidelines”.
The college principal said in a statement , “The video clip being circulated on social media has captured a part of the dance by students from the Muslim community itself who barged on stage during the informal part of the students association inaugural. It was not part of the approved programmes and the students involved have been suspended pending enquiry,” as quoted in India Today.
“The college does not support or condone activities that could harm the harmony between communities and everyone,” it added.
