Following the same ,a 87-year-old woman made herself proud and everyone to be proud of her as she recently received her second Master’s degree .
As per reports , Mrs Varatha Shanmuganathan, the Super lady who migrated from India to Canada in 2004, recently got her second Master’s degree from York University, Canada, and with this she became the oldest person in the country to earn a graduate degree. Earlier she completed her first master’s degree in her mid-50s from the University of London’s Birkbeck College in the United Kingdom.
Mrs Varatha Shanmuganathan was recently honoured by the Members of the Provincial Parliament at the Ontario Legislature. A video of her at the Ontario Legislature has surfaced online and is now going viral. The video was posted on Instagram by Vijay Thanigasalam.

Taking to Instagram, Vijay Thanigasalam, at the Ontario Legislature shared a video of Varatha Amma, as they fondly call her, being honored by them.
While sharing the video he wrote , “It was my privilege to honour Mrs. Varatha Shanmuganathan at the Ontario Legislature, as the oldest person to graduate with a master’s degree from York University and one of the oldest women to earn a graduate degree in all of Canada.
Varatha amma’s love for teaching and learning has allowed her the opportunity to live and teach in four different continents throughout her life. She completed her first master’s degree when she was in her mid-50s at the University of London’s Birkbeck College in the United Kingdom. She later moved to Canada in 2004. In 2019, Varatha amma learned that York University provided a tuition waiver incentive for seniors and was encouraged by her daughter to apply for the master’s program.
Despite the challenges that the COVID-19 pandemic posed, Varatha amma successfully completed her program.
As she continues to be a fruitful presence in the lives of many, at the age of 87, she has never given up on the power of education. She is an inspiration to the younger generation beginning their journey or our seniors looking for the next adventure. She teaches us all that learning is a lifelong commitment.

Vijay mentioned that Amma is also the oldest woman to earn a graduate degree in Canada. According to Vijay , Amma has educational degrees from four different continents.
