According to the study of Prof Parag Phukan of the Department of Geological of Gauhati University and his team researchers in the last 50 years, the Brahmaputra river has eroded around 1,280sq km land on both sides of the river and in recent times also, river bank erosion has become a major cause of concerned.
In his research further added ,In the year of 2022, the most erosion prone areas are found in Morigaon district where there is net loss of as much as 204sq km during the year 1967 to 2022, sponge out dozen of village, one of the major reason he included the situation started worsening after the massive earthquake of 1950 and now the situation has turned grave.
What more interesting is that , Brahmaputra also generated as many as 618 sq km of new floodplain areas on both bank because of it redeposition process.
According to the data Brahmaputra erodes about 80 square km area from Assam every year and about 7 per cent of land in the state , 17 riverine district has been lost because of river erosion over the last 50 years.
Planting of trees or bamboo along river banks , solid structure along river bank with help of RCC, steel, Dampener , Geobags and so on will avoid the river erosion.
