“The greater the obstacle, the more glory in overcoming it.” – Molière.
Ham-e-Konyak, a 15-year old ‘gifted’ Naga boy has proved in his own style that if you have determination and courage to go through any obstacles then nothing is unbeatable. Born visually impaired but this gifted kid has developed a great quality to sing in 16 different languages.
Ham-e-Konyak was born on November 21, 2002 in a small village in Kongan, Nagaland’s Mon district. Ham was the 1st child of his parents. Although it was shocking for his parents to find their 1st child born visually impaired but they lovingly accepted him and put all efforts to provide him a normal childhood like his three other siblings.
Ham-e-Konyak sings in almost all of the languages of Naga tribes including Sumi, Chakesang, Yimchunger, Angami, Rengma, Lotha, Sangtam, Phom, Pochury, Kuki, Khemnyungen, Tikhir, Zeliang, Ao, Chang and Konyak. He has performed in Sumi, Yimchunger, Angami, Rengma, English, Hindi, and a variety of other tribal languages. He also has a YouTube channel to showcase his talent which he created with the help of his brother-in-law.
Surprisingly the way he sings nobody would think that Ham-e-Konyak didn’t acquire any formal training in music.. He is a self-trained artist, he learnt guitar by himself, listening to every kinds of music from a small audio player, “Seeing my love for music, my father bought me a guitar,” he said.
Ham-e-Konyak had never been to school ,So spending time at home and listening to there was the only option left for him. But this in a way helped him to identify his own potential to sing.
However the gifted kid feels upset for not having a formal education due to absence of a school in his area for children like him .
