According to the World Health Organization (WHO), Cervical cancer is the fourth most common cancer in women. In India, it is the second most frequent cancer among women between 15 and 44 years of age.
In a recent information the Serum Institute of India (SII), has recently received market authorization from the Drugs Controller General of India (DGCI) to approved the country first Cervical Cancer Vaccine. It is is India’s first quadrivalent human papillomavirus vaccine (qHPV) designed to protect women from cervical cancer. Cervical cancer is a common sexually transmitted long-lasting infection and caused by certain types of human papillomavirus (HPV). India witnesses 1.23 lakh cases and approximately 67,000 deaths each year. HPV vaccination for Cervical cancer was introduced in 2008.
The Two vaccines licensed globally are available in India such as a quadrivalent vaccine and a bivalent vaccine.
The National Health Portal Of India (NHPI) lists that 122,844 women are diagnosed with cervical cancer every year, and 67,477 succumb to the disease.
According to the information, A quadrivalent vaccine is a vaccine that stimulates an immune response against four different antigens – viruses or other microorganisms.
World Health Organization’s International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC-WHO), has inform that India accounts for approximately one-fifth of the global burden.
Cervical cancer is preventable as long as it is detected early and managed effectively. It is the second most common cancer type after Breast cancer and the second leading cause of cancer death in women of reproductive age the age of 15-44 years as worldwide.
