Dhemaji’s folk culture saint and devoted cultural organizer Eklavya Gham was honored with the Pratima Pandey Awards 2022 on Tuesday .
The award was conferred by the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) on the death anniversary of Pratima Barua Pandey.
The event was organized by AASU at the Chandmari Swahid Udyan and was started with ceremonial lamp lit by AASU Chief Advisor Samujjal Kumar Bhattacharya.
Eklavya Gham who received the Pratima Pandey Awards 2022 hails from Dhemaji district. He was conferred with seleng sador, Gamusa, Xorai and Rs. 25,000 cash at the event.
The event witnessed a series of performance of Goalpara Folk Songs by various artists. The award ceremony was attended by AASU members, journalists and many others.
Last year, the award was presented to one of the most popular folk artist and Bihu Samrat, Khagen Gogoi.
Pratima Barua Pandey was born on 3rd October 1934 and took her last breathe on December 2022. She was the daughter of Prakritish Chandra Barua and niece of filmmaker Pramathesh Chandra Barua of Devdas fame.
Pratima Barua Pandey the legendary Goalpariya folk singer is a national awardee and she was the one who brought Goalpariya Lokgeet on the national platform with her evergreen numbers like ‘Hastir Kanya’, ‘Mur Mahut Bandhure’ and many more.
She hailed from the royal family of Gauripur in west Assam’s Dhubri district. Pratima Barua Pandey was awarded with the prestigious Padma Shri and Sangeet Natak Academi for tremendous efforts and contribution in promoting and popularising Goalpariya Lokageet.
