In Independence Day speech of 15 august 2019, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced Jal Jeevan Mission. It main Mission is to achieve the sustainable Development Goals (SDG) ahead of 2024.
It is significantly initiated by the Government of India which help the state in achieving SDG.
It main goal is to supply Tab drinking water to every rural household of the country by 2024.
It tagline of Jal Jeevan Mission is “Har Ghar Jal”. Which is implemented by the Ministry of Jal Shakti.
The government of Assam intends to provide Functional Household Tab connection providing access to safe drinking water to 2.92 crore population residing in 63.35 lakh households in the rural areas across the state of Assam. Another main goal is to initiate a women driven movement to empower the community so as to manage the water related issues by themselves.
According to initial report stated by Akash Deep, IAS Public health engineering Department and director of Jal Mission, Assam said The major reason of Assam lagging behind other states is that , prior to initiation of JJM in the state only 1.10 lakh of rural households had tap connection, while the national coverage was 18% and the states and UTs like Goa,Telangana, A&N , Islands, Poducherry , Haryana had a larger base of completed FHTCs prior to JJM, he also added the covid-19 pandemic in 2020-2021 and the devastating flood every year have hampered the progress to some extent, he said.
Assam ranks 28 in the implementation of JJM and only 39% of the Assam total 63.65 lakh households are covered so far.
Earlier Department of Drinking Water and sanitation, Vini Mahajan said “”Assam is well on track to achieve the target of providing clean tap water supply to every home by 2024 and the Centre is providing full assistance to the state to achieve the goal,” she said.
