A rare moment was witnessed on Thursday after a unique cricket tournament to promote Sanskrit began in Madhya Pradesh’s Bhopal at Ankur Khel Maidan, number 6. People witnessed 22 Vedic pandits from different regions wearing traditional dhoti and kurtas walking onto the cricket pitch to mark the birth anniversary of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi.
Named ‘Maharshi Cup’ , it is an annual four-day cricket tournament. The players clad in traditional dhoti and kurtas are the persons who perform rituals as per the Vedas. They speak in Sanskrit and even the match commentary is also in Sanskrit. The umpiring in the game is also done in Sanskrit.

The Maharshi Cup is being held for the third time. The cricket tournament aims to promote the ancient Sanskrit language and sportsmanship among the Vedic family. Teams from various Vedic institutions are participating in the four-day tournament.
According to reports, the winning teams will be awarded cash prizes for winning teams, with a sum of Rs 31,000, while the runner-up and second runner-up will get Rs 21,000 and Rs 5,000, respectively. The players will also be honoured with Vedic books and a 100-year panchang (almanac).
