A 120-feet -tall statue of Sagol Kangjei was recently constructed and completed at Heingang hill at Marjing in Imphal East. The statue was long awaited and it holds a mythological significance connected with the Polo sport.
Taking to Twitter, the Manipur Chief Minister – N. Biren Singh wrote “Finally, the long awaited 120-feet, Sagol Kangjei Statue at Marjing has been completed. In just few days, the statue will be ready for inauguration. With PM @narendramodi Ji’s guidance, we have been able to deliver projects within the stipulated time.”
According to the Manipur Chief Minister, N. Biren Singh, the will be ready for inauguration within a few days .
The massive sized statue is placed above the hill top of Ebudhou Marjing hills. According to reports Sagol Kangjei (English: Polo) is originally the game of gods. There are 7 players on each side. They used Kangdrum (a ball made from bamboo root).
The Sagol Kangjei originated in Manipur and later emerged as Polo. The term itself reveals its meaning, Sagol stands for a Pony or a Horse; Kang means a ball whereas Jei stands for a stick.
It is believed that the game was introduced by King Kangba of Manipur who ordered his officers to play the game on horseback.

Meanwhile according to latest reports , after a gap of two years the 14th International Polo Tournament is all set to return with the participation of six teams including teams from abroad this month.
The 14th International Polo Tournament is being organised by the Manipur Government in association with Manipur Horse Riding & Polo Association (MHR&PA) as part of the Sangai Festival at Mapal Kangjeibung.
