Britain’s longest-ruling monarch, Queen Elizabeth II, died at the age of 96 on Thursday. After the queen’s demise and the end of her 70-year reign, Prince Charles comes next in line for the throne with another crucial change concerning the Kohinoor diamond.
Reports claim that 75-year-old Camilla, the wife of King Charles III, who will be the new British monarch, will receive the Queen Mother’s famous Kohinoor crown. Earlier this year, the Queen had announced that Prince Charles wife Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall, would become Queen Consort when he accedes to the throne.
The Kohinoor is a 105.6 carat diamond and it was found in India in the 14th century and has switched hands over the course of centuries. In 1849, after the annexation of Punjab, the British gold hold of the diamond as the diamond was ceded to Queen Victoria. Although it has a become a symbol of the British monarchy- but even today it is a subject of a historic ownership dispute among at least four countries, including India. According to the British, the Kohinoor was ceded to Queen Victoria like the other assets of the king although many have disputed the claim. In 1937 the Kohinoor Crown was created for the coronation of King George VI and has been part of the British Crown Jewels since then.
The crown is set in a platinum frame with 2,800 diamonds including the Kohinoor.
