As informed in a corrigendum issued on Monday, the Assam government has declared holiday on September 15 (Thursday) on account of Tithi of Sri Madhavdev. Earlier the government had notified that the holiday on “Tithi of Sri Sri Madhavdev will be on September 14 but now the final declared holiday date is September 15.
This holiday marks the death anniversary of the 16th century Assamese saint-reformer.
Madhabdev (1489–1596) was an important preceptor of the Srimanta Sankardev’s Ekasarana Dharma. He was the most devoted and prominent disciple of his guru, Sri Sri Srimanta Sankardev. He was converted to Ekasarana Dharma by the Sri Sri Srimanta Sankardev. Madhavdev is best known as creator of Naam Ghoxa, a large selection of Borgeets.
The Borgeets are written and composed by both Srimanta Sankardev and Madhabdev .
Srimanta Sankardev accepted Madhabdev as his prana bandhava (friend of the soul), and anointed him later as his successor.
