According to latest news report, a Brazilian court has fined Apple nearly $19 million for selling iPhones without chargers. The court ruled that the iPhone has to be sold along with charger in the country. As per the lawsuit filed by the association of borrowers, consumers and taxpayers, they claimed that the company is following an unfair practice of selling its leading product without a charger.
Meanwhile earlier it was claimed by Apple that the removal of chargers from the packaging was aimed to reduce e-waste and carbon emissions caused due to spare chargers. According to Apple, excluding chargers with iPhones will save 861,000 tonnes of copper, zinc and tin.
However, the Brazilian Ministry of Justice said that Apple can help the environment by allowing USB-C support in its devices.
The Brazilian court however in its ruling stated that, “It is evident that, under the justification of a ‘green initiative,’ the defendant imposes on the consumer a required purchase of charger adaptors that were previously supplied along with the product.”
The Justice Ministry also claimed that there happens to be no evidence of the fact that exclusion of the charger was protecting the environment.
