Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tributes to Assam’s celebrated warrior Lachit Borphukan on his 400th birth anniversary today on Thursday.
While addressing this remarkable day, PM Modi took to Twitter and wrote “Greetings on Lachit Diwas. This Lachit Diwas is special because we mark the 400th birth anniversary of the great Lachit Borphukan,” “He (Borphukan) epitomized unparalleled courage. He placed the well-being of people above everything else and was a just as well as visionary leader,” .

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma also posted on his twitter handle and wrote, “A fearless warrior, statesman & valiant son of our motherland, Lachit Barphukan became an icon for the people of Assam with his heroic exploits against the Mughals. While the entire country is celebrating 2022 as the 400th birth anniversary year of Lachit Barphukan, the celebrations were inaugurated in February this year by the then President Ram Nath Kovind in Guwahati.
Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Wednesday inaugurated the 3-day celebrations of the 400th birth anniversary of the 17th century Ahom Army General Lachit Borphukan at Vigyan Bhawan in Delhi.
On 25th November Prime Minister Narendra Modi will address the closing ceremony of the year long celebrations of the leader’s 400th birth anniversary as per a statement by the PMO. Besides a book on Lachit Borphukan will be released and a documentary on the great warrior will also be screened at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi.
Lachit Borphukan was a general of the Ahom Kingdom of Assam who led his army and successfully defeated the Mughals thereby stopped the imperial expansion of the Mughal Empire .
Every year on 24 November, Lachit Divas is celebrated across Assam to commemorate the heroism of Lachit Borphukan and the victory of the Ahom army at the Battle of Saraighat.
This day is hence marked to remind us about the legendary Ahom general to promote the ideals of Lachit Borphukan – the legendary general of Assam’s history who changed the course of history with his unbeatable bravery and spirit .
The best cadet from the National Defence Academy is awarded the Lachit Borphukan gold medal. It was first instituted in 1999 following an announcement by General VP Malik saying the medal would inspire defence personnel to emulate Barphukan’s heroism and sacrifices.
