Meghalaya’s chief minister Conrad Sangma on Saturday has informed about the inclusion of Meghalaya’s Mawmluh cave at Sohra in one of the “First 100 IUGS Geological Sites” by the International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS) of UNESCO in the world.
Taking to Twitter , Meghalaya chief minister Conrad Sangma tweeted: “Mawmluh Cave in Sohra, Meghalaya known for the ‘Meghalayan Age’ has been selected by @theIUGS(@UNESCO) as one of the ‘FIRST 100 IUGS GEOLOGICAL SITES’ in the world.”
“IUGS 60th Anniversary Event in Zumaia, Basque Coast UNESCO Global Geopark (Spain) will declare The First 100 IUGS Geological Heritage Sites selected from 181 candidate sites from 56 countries,” Meghalaya CM Conrad Sangma added.
Locally known as Krem Mawmluh, Mawmluh cave at Sohra in Meghalaya is one of the prominent caves in Meghalaya and also one of the top places to visit in Cherrapunji.
The cave attracts adventure seekers and is located at an altitude of 4,503 m. The entry point to this cave is located at a height of 10 feet above sea level.
Mawmluh Cave is well known for the stalagmite formations and other rock formations found inside. Also, there is a pool inside the cave, formed as a result of five different rivers making their way inside the cave.
