Every state /UT of India starting from the largest to the smallest has a unique demography, history and culture, dress, festivals, language ,dress etc. The historical backdrop of formation of these states are also unique .
Interestingly various states of India including Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Haryana, Karnataka, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab are marking their Formation Day today on November 1 and Delhi , Chandigarh, Puducherry, Lakshadeep and Andaman & Nicobar were given the status of Union territories on this day.
Indian States formed on Formation Day:
Tamil Nadu (1st November 1956):
Tamil Nadu state was formed after a part of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, and Kerala were separated from Madras’s Presidency. The death of a Tamil scholar and Gandhian, named K Sankaralinganar followed by a 75 day indefinite fast in October 1956 led the then administration to pass the Linguistics Reorganisation of States in 1956 bill in the state assembly and also secure the parliamentary agreement.
Andhra Pradesh (1st November 1956):
Andhra Pradesh was formed after being separated from the then Madras Presidency, following a great agitation and sacrifices. The Telangana region which was a part of then Hyderabad state was merged later with the Andhra State to form a complete state of Andhra Pradesh.
Kerala (1st November 1956):
Along with Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka, after getting separated from Madras Presidency, the state of Kerala was formed on November 1, 1956 after the merger of Malabar, Cochin, and Travancore provinces after the Linguistic Reorganisation of States in 1956 was passed.
Madhya Pradesh (1st November 1956):
Madhya Pradesh state was formed after the states of Madhya Bharat, Vindhya Pradesh, and Bhopal were merged together. And Vidarbha , the Marathi-speaking southern region was merged into Bombay.
Karnataka (1st November 1956):
Karnataka state was formed after the Kannada-speaking regions of South India were merged together. The princely state of Mysore was merged with Kannada-speaking regions of Madras and Bombay presidencies, and also of the principality of Hyderabad to create Karnataka.
Haryana (1st November 1966):
As per the Punjab Reorganisation Act,1966 under the chairmanship of Justice JC Shah, the existing state of Punjab was divided to form and determine the boundaries of the new state of Haryana.
Punjab (1st November 1966):
Punjab was formed with the state of East Punjab, to create a new enlarged state called “Punjab”. After Haryana got separated on a linguistic basis, the Punjabi-speaking population was merged to form Punjab under the Punjab Reorganization Act, 1966.
Chhattisgarh (1st November 2000):
By partitioning 10 Chattisgarhi and 6 Gondi-speaking southeastern regions of Madhya Pradesh ,the state of Chattisgarh was formed after receiving the consent of the then president on the Madhya Pradesh Reorganisation Act, 2000 on 25th August 2000.
So since this day observes such a historical moment, President Droupadi Murmu and leaders from across the country extended their greetings to all the states and Union territories which share their foundation day on November 1.
