Cyber Security Awareness Month (CSAM ) is observed globally and the theme for this year is “See Yourself in Cyber”. The theme focuses on the actions that should be taken by everyone to improve cyber security.
Cyber Security is a crucial part in a digital routine and it has also become a part of every individual. The more digitally connected we are, the more responsible we need to be to take care of our cyber safety and be cautious of our digital footprints . With the rise in various aspects of new-age cyber frauds (telephone and financial frauds), identity theft crimes (phishing), and malware detection people needs to be more aware of cyber safety .
Cyber Security Awareness Month is celebrated across the world to create awareness among the people by driving their attention to Cyber Security to guide them to stay safe and secure online. It comes as an initiative to ensure improved cyber security hygiene and implement stronger security measures.
In the year 2004, October was declared as Cybersecurity Awareness Month by the National Cyber Security Alliance and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). October month is chosen and dedicated to provide online safety resources to people across the world through highlighting the importance of taking the safety steps to improve cybersecurity .
While in cyberspace any individual should start the practice of a few basic pointers of cybersecurity which will enable to enhance and improve the cyber security of an individual or an organization.
Enabling multifactor authentication– take this as priority to improve access controls by activating additional authentication requirements in addition to a password. This will help prevent access from being granted to fishy accounts .
Using strong passwords and a password manager– use strong and unique passwords for all accounts also you can use a password manager to create those passwords and store them securely in an encrypted password vault.
Software Update– keep your software up to date also be aware and keep a check on any software vulnerabilities.
Recognizing and reporting phishing– Learn to recognize types of phishing, the red flags to spot phishing , be it in emails, text messages, social media posts, and telephone calls or anything which seems suspicious attempts of phishing . Ensure to report such phishing attempts.
